Spine Injuries and Treatment of Combat Sports Participants
Description
Analyze the specific biomechanical forces—such as axial loading, hyperflexion, and rotational torque—inherent to combat sports (e.g., wrestling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, MMA) that predispose athletes to acute and chronic spinal injuries Formulate an evidence-based diagnostic, conservative, and interventional treatment algorithm for common combat sports-specific spine pathologies, including cervical radiculopathy, lumbar disc herniations, and transient quadriparesis (""stingers"") Apply osteopathic structural assessment and principles—specifically evaluating the structural continuity of the kinetic chain from the sacrum to the cervical spine—to optimize non-operative patient care, enhance somatic dysfunction resolution, and guide safe return-to-play protocols for combat athletes
